This piece was written as a submission for the 2014 West Chester University Speedwriting Competition in the Department of History, Theory, and Composition. The guidelines for the competition were to select one of four traditional folk tunes, and compose a new piece of music, inspired by the selected tune, for two instruments, choosing from Clarinet, Violin, and Piano.
Following those guidelines, this work finds it textural roots in the open sonority of the pentatonic scale comprising the melody of “The Riddle Song,” and melody itself can be seen as fast-growing, wildly uncontrolled vine that emerges out of the opening seven notes of the original tune. While the melody begins much the same way as in “The Riddle Song,” it finds new directions to travel, retaining some of the original qualities from the tune, but arriving in new, unexpected places.
